A German thriller about a true story of a crossing of the German border from the GDR to West Germany with a homemade hot-air balloon. It follows the families Strelzyk and Wetzel who secretly built their balloon from scratch in a cellar in Thuringia, before flying across the border into Bavaria one night in September 1979. They took about 18 months, sewing together 1,000 square metres of cloth. They would build three balloons and make two failed attempts before, finally landing safely in Bavaria, making the first ever escape of its kind.
