Lee Chandler (Casey Affleck) lives in Boston but, after his older brother Joe dies, he discovers that he’s been made sole guardian of his nephew.

Lee reluctantly returns to Manchester-by-the-Sea to care for Patrick, a spirited 16-year-old. He revisits memories of why he left the area and is forced to deal with a past that separated him from his wife, Randi, and the community where he was born and raised.
